Olmstead and ADA Ten years later
Since its passage in 1990 the American's with Disabilities Act has had a significant impact on people with disabilities including access to transportation, communication, public accommodation and employment. In 1999 the U.S. Supreme Court, (under the Olmstead Decision) determined that the American's with Disabilities Act also applies to a person's right to live in a community. This year sees the ten year anniversary of Olmstead, which certified that the segregation of people with disabilities in institutions is discriminatory and violates basic civil rights. Since this decision States have expanded opportunities for community based living for people with disabilities as well as taken actions to make life easier for said people in the general populace.
